Basic Freestyle

The USFSA Basic Freestyle program is for those skaters who wish to progress into Free Skating skills while remaining in the group lesson environment.  It is not a prerequisite to any USFSA Standard Test. These are the elements as defined in the Revised Curriculum 2000 (effective Sept 1, 2000)

Freestyle 1 Freestyle 4
  • Advanced forward stroking.
  • Basic FO & FI consecutive edges (4-6 edges)
  • Advanced BO 3-turn (CW & CCW, R&L)
  • Scratch spin from back XOs (min 3 rev)
  • Waltz jump; from 2-3 back XOs
  • Half flip
  • Spiral sequence: FI spiral, FI mohawk, BO spiral (CW & CCW)
  • Forward power 3-turns (R&L)
  • Continuous back progressive, chasse sequence on a circle (CW & CCW)
  • Sit spin (3 revs)
  • Loop jump
  • Jump combination: waltz-loop
  
Freestyle 2 Freestyle 5
  • Basic BO & BI consecutive edges (4-6 edges)
  • FO & FI spirals (CCW & CW, R&L)
  • Continuous forward progressive chasse sequence (CW & CCW)
  • Waltz 3s
  • Beginning back spin (2 turns)
  • Jump sequence: Waltz jump, side toe hop, waltz jump
  • Toe loop
  • BO 3-turn, mohawk into 3 back XOs (repeat 3 times)
  • Spiral sequence: FO spiral, FO 3-turn, one back XO, BI spiral (CW & CCW)
  • FO slide chasse swing roll sequence (3-6 times, alternating feet)
  • Camel spin (min 3 revs)
  • Forward upright spin to back scratch spin (3 revs per foot)
  • Jump combination: loop-loop
  • Flip jump
  • Jump sequence: waltz, falling leaf, toe loop
 
Freestyle 3 Freestyle 6
  • Forward & Backward  XOs in figure-8 pattern
  • Waltz Eight (MIF)
  • Advanced forward consecutive swing rolls (4-6 edges)
  • BI 3-turn (CW & CCW)
  • Backspin with freefoot in crossed leg position (min 3 revs)
  • Salchow
  • Half Lutz
  • Jump combination: waltz-toe loop, or salchow-toe loop
  • Alternating back XOs to BO edges
  • 5-step mohawk sequence (CW & CCW)
  • Spin combination: camel/sit (5 revs)
  • Split jump / stag jump
  • Jump sequence: waltz, half loop, Salchow
  • Lutz jump
  • Axel walkthrough; preparation, jump (Axel does not need to be landed to pass this test; skater should have an understanding of the mechanics)
